The History of Recipes
Experts have traced the existence of recipes way back into antiquity, at least as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, these, old cook books were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe found, according to experts in ancient history are some tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel exhilarated and blissful. During the time of the Roman Empire a roman called Apicius compiled a few documents describing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were separated into starters, main course and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius describes how the ancient cooks made use of many aromatic flavours, including many that are still in use today like bay, fennel and asafoetida. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods and spices from the Middle-East, including spices such as parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices led to a torrent in manuscripts on cooking, some of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. By the arrival of the 20th century, cookery publications are in great demand, as a result of increased literacy, increased leisure time and a general increase in wealth. The introduction of television brings us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
