The History of Recipes
Historians have tracked the existance of recipes way back into history, in fact as far back into history as early Egypt, and maybe further still. In practice though, sadly, these old recipes were just very simple pictorial instructions for food preparation.
As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there were some books which appeared in the 14th Century : a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these are nothing to do with the curry that is served today, but rather recipes for the types of meals enjoyed by the rich and powerful of those days. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and herbs from the holy lands, including parsley, basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations prompted an eruption in books on cookery, many of which are now in academic collections. The introduction of the TV gave us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like those on our web site. |
