The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of `recipes` far back into the far past, in truth as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, generally, these old cook books were just simple pictorial recipes for food preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to academics are a few tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Later, we find two interesting cookery books from the 14th Century : a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, they are unconnected to the indian curry that we all know today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals prepared for the upper classes of that time. For the decades that followed, the powerful and rich tried to serve the best banquets, and as a result cooks and their collection of recipes were at a premium. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. By the time we get to the 1900s, cookbooks are increasing in popularity due to increased literacy, more free time and having more disposable income. The arrival of television gave us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
We hope you enjoy this Chinese Chicken recipe.
