The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to prove the history of recipes far back into history, certainly as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. However, in the main part, these early cook books were just very basic pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe found, according to academics are a few clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel blissful and exhilarated. As we move into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius assembled some documents describing recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also tells us how the early Romans used a wide range of aromatic flavors, including some that we all recognise for example basil, fennel and parsley. Closer to modern times, there are two interesting books from the 14th Century ; a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these are nothing to do with the indian curry that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of food on the menues of the rich and powerful of those days. Later, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many foods, spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including rosemary and coriander. These new foods and tastes caused an outbreak in recipe books, some of which are kept safe in private collections. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes just like those on sites such as this. |
