The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to track the history of recipes way back into ancient history, in fact as far into history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these early cookbooks were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
As we move into Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius created a collection of scripts showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and dessert, something we still use today. He also informs us how the chefs of Roman times made use of a wide range of herbs and spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks like bay, rue and parsley. Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and herbs from the Middle-East, such as coriander, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices prompted an eruption in publications on food, most of which are now in private libraries. The revolution that is television brought us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on our web site. |
