The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of `recipes` far back into history, at least as far back into history as the Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. However, generally, these old records were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe found, according to experts is a collection of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel blissful. Moving on, we have some interesting books dating from the 14th Century - a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, they have no connection with the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but instead descriptions of the types of food enjoyed by the rich and powerful of that period. During the following few centuries, the rich families of Wesstern Europe strove to offer the best banquets, and because of this cooks and their recipes became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century that fine cookery and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, trying out, and writing down the recipes of their peers. By the advent of the 1900s, cooking publications are greatly in demand due to higher levels of literacy, people having more spare time and disposable income. The revolution that is television brings us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on our site. |
