The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be tracked way back into ancient history, in truth as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these early recipes were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
Much later, in Roman times a man called Apicius compiled some scripts which described recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the roman meals were divided into starters, main meal and afters, a very modern way of dining. Additionally, he recounts how the ancient cooks made use of a wide range of aromatic flavors, including many that are still in use today such as basil, fennel and dill. Over the succeeding few hundred years, the rich families of Europe tried to serve up the most exotic banquets, and as a result the best cooks and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. Even so, it was during the 19th century that formal cookery and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, trying out, and recording popular recipes of the day. The TV revolution brought us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on sites such as this. |
We hope you enjoy this Chinese Sweet & Sour Soup recipe.
