The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be found way back into ancient history, in fact as far as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, these, ancient recipes were just simple hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are a few tablets in Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `blissful`. Continuing our culinary historical journey, there are some interesting books which appeared in the 14th Century : a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these books are unconnected to the indian food that is served today, but rather recipes for the types of meals on the tables of the upper classes of the period. Later on, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods and herbs from the holy lands, including coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes created a torrent in publications on food, the majority of which are now in private collections. Over the succeeding few centuries, the powerful families of Europe strove to serve up the most extravagent meals, and consequentially the best cooks and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cookery and cookery books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collating, trying out, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. When we get to the twentieth century, recipe publications were greatly in demand mostly as a result of better eduction, people having more leisure time and a general increase in wealth. The TV revolution brought us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as this. |
