The History of Recipes

We are able to trace the history of written recipes way back into antiquity, at least as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Having said that, mostly, these old records were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.

The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts is a series of clay tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel wonderful and blissful.

As we move on, there were two recipe books dating from the 1300s - a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these books are nothing to do with the curry that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of meals on the tables of the rich people of the time.

During the next few centuries, the rich and powerful families of Europe competed to offer the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, cooks and their recipes became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 1800s that formal cookery and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to assembling, trying out, and recording recipes common in their social group.

By the advent of the 20th century, cookery publications are in great demand, mostly due to more people being able to read, more spare time and disposable income.
