The History of Recipes
We are able to read the history of written recipes far back into the far past, in fact as far back as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, these, ancient records were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to academics is a series of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel blissful. Much later, in Roman times a roman called Apicius wrote a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Additionally, he recounts how the Roman cooks used a wide range of herbs and spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as basil, rue and parsley. Over the succeeding few hundred years, the powerful and rich houses strove to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipes were much in demand. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cooking and recipe publications became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to assembling, verifying, and publishing recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The TV revolution gave us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes just like those on our web site. |
