The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to track the history of written cooking instructions back into the distant past, in truth as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. However, these, old cook books were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Moving on, there are a couple of interesting cookery books which date from the fourteenth century : one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these are not about the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but instead descriptions of the types of food on the menues of the nobility of those days. By the time we get to the twentieth century, recipe publications were increasing in popularity mostly due to more people being able to read, more leisure time and being a little richer. |
