The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to prove the history of recipes back into distant history, certainly as far back as pharonic Egypt, and maybe even further. In practice though, sadly, these old recipes were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there are two interesting books from the 1300s - a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these two books are nothing to do with the curry that is served today, but instead accounts of the types of meals on the menues of the rich. By the arrival of the 20th century, cooking books were in high demand, due to more people being able to read, leisure time and disposable income. |
