The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to trace the history of written cooking instructions back into the distant past, in truth as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. However, mostly, these ancient cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to food historians are a few clay tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel `wonderful`. Closer to modern times, there are a couple of interesting cookery books dating from the 14th Century ; a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these are not about the indian curry that is popular today, but instead recipes for the types of meals enjoyed by the rich and powerful of that time. Later, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many new foods, spices and herbs from Arab countries, including parsley and basil. These new herbs and spices prompted a torrent in books on cookery, many of which are now in private collections. During the next few hundred years, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe tried to serve the best banquets, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipe collections were at a premium. Even so, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe collections rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collating, trying out, and writing down the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. By the time we get to the twentieth century, recipe publications were increasing in popularity due to more people being able to read, people having more leisure time and having more money to spend. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
