The History of Recipes
We can follow the history of `recipes` way back into history, in fact as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these early records were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts are some stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. Later on, in Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts which described recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. He tells us how the roman meals were divided into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius also tells us how the early Romans made use of a wide range of aromatic flavours, including a few you will know like basil, rue and dill. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices like coriander, parsley, and basil. These new culinary innovations prompted an outbreak in manuscripts on cooking, some of which are now in private collections. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes just like those on our site. |
