The History of Recipes
We can follow the history of written recipes way back into distant history, in fact as far back into history as early Egypt, and maybe even further. Having said that, sadly, these old recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts is a collection of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel blissful. As we move on, there were two recipe books from the 14th Century : a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, they are nothing to do with the spicy food that we all know today, but instead recipes for the types of meals prepared for the nobility of the period. During the next few centuries, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed to offer the best banquets, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their collection of recipes became highly prized. Even so, it was during the 1800s that cooking and cookery books rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, testing, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. By the advent of the 20th century, cookery books were in great demand, due to more people being able to read, more leisure time and disposable income. |
