The History of Recipes
Food historians have tracked the existance of recipes way back into the distant past, certainly as far back into history as early Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, these, early records were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a few scripts showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and afters, something we still use today. Aspicius also tells us how the Roman chefs used a wide range of aromatic flavors, including some familiar names for example basil, mint and parsley. During the next few centuries, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe strove to offer the most extravagent meals, and because of this the best cooks and their recipes were at a premium. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cooking and recipe books became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to assembling, trying out, and writing down recipes of the day. The revolution that is television brings us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes just like those on sites such as this. |
