The History of Recipes
Academics have tracked the existence of recipes far back into history, in truth as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, generally, these early cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
Later on, we have two interesting cookery books published in the fourteenth century - one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these books are nothing to do with the spicy food that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of food on the tables of the wealthy. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and spices from middle-east cuisine, including spices like coriander, basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs created a surge in manuscripts on cookery, some of which are kept safe in private libraries. The introduction of the TV brought us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as this. |
