The History of Recipes
We can follow the history of meal recipes back into history, certainly as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. Having said that, generally, these early cookbooks were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered, according to historians is a series of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel exhilarated and blissful. Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few scripts describing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the roman meals were divided into hors d`oeuvre, main course and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Additionally, he recounts how the chefs of Roman times were skilled in the use of a wide range of spices, including a few you will know like bay, rue and parsley. Later, there are a couple of interesting recipe books published in the 1300s - one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these are unconnected to the curry that appears on menues today, but instead recipes for the types of food enjoyed by the upper classes of the period. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods and spices from the holy lands, such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices caused a torrent in manuscripts on food, some of which are kept safe in private libraries. The arrival of television brought us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on this web site. |
