The History of Recipes

Historians have tracked the existence of recipes back into distant history, certainly as far back as early Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these old cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.

Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts are some stone tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`.

Progressing into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote some scripts showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he describes how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and dessert, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius tells us how the ancient Romans were skilled in the use of many different aromatic flavors, including a few you will know for example bay, fennel and dill.

Moving on, we find a couple of books which date from the fourteenth century ; a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these books are nothing to do with the indian food that we all know today, but rather descriptions of the types of food eaten by the rich and wealthy people of those days.

Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of spices and herbs from the holy land, including spices like parsley and basil. These new foods and tastes created a surge in publications on food, most of which still exist in academic collections.

During the next few hundred years, the powerful and wealthy houses strove to serve the most exotic banquets, and consequentially the best chefs and their recipe collections became highly prized. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cookery and recipe books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collating, trying out, and writing down recipes of the day.

By the advent of the 1900s, cook books are greatly in demand mostly due to better eduction, people having increased leisure time and disposable income.

Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books.

And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like those on sites such as this.
