3/4 cup walnuts-chopped
3/4 cup chocolate chips
1/2 cup sugar
4 tbsp cinnamon
Directions
Cream butter and sugar till fluffy. Add eggs one at a time. Blend

baking powder, baking soda, salt and beer. Blend well. In a small
bowl, combine nuts, chips, sugar and cinnamon. Pour flour mixture
into greased and floured tube pan. You may alternate flour mixture

to flour mixture and pour all into pan. I do the latter. Bake at

The History of Recipes
Academics have tracked the existance of recipes way back into ancient history, at least as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Having said that, mostly, these early records were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to academics are a few ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel wonderful. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we have a couple of interesting books which date from the 1300s : a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these two books are not about the indian curry that we all know today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the rich people of the period. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many spices and herbs from the holy lands, including spices such as parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices created a torrent in books on cookery, most of which still exist in private collections. During the succeeding few hundred years, the rich families of Europe competed with each other to offer the most exotic banquets, and consequentially chefs and their collection of recipes were at a premium. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, spent years to collecting, testing, and publishing the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes such as those found on this site. |
