3/4 cup walnuts-chopped
3/4 cup chocolate chips
1/2 cup sugar
4 tbsp cinnamon
Directions
Cream butter and sugar till fluffy. Add eggs one at a time. Blend
well. Add vanilla and sour cream. Blend till creamy. Add flour,
baking powder, baking soda, salt and beer. Blend well. In a small
bowl, combine nuts, chips, sugar and cinnamon. Pour flour mixture
into greased and floured tube pan. You may alternate flour mixture

to flour mixture and pour all into pan. I do the latter. Bake at

The History of Recipes
We can track the history of written recipes way back into the far past, at least as far into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. However, sadly, these old cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
In fact, the oldest recipe in existence, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are a few stone tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel `wonderful`. Progressing into Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of documents detailing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius describes how the meals were divided into starters, entrees and desserts, something we still use today. Additionally, he tells us how the cooks of Roman times used a good variety of spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as thyme, rue and parsley. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought back many foods, spices and herbs from Arab cooking, including parsley and basil. These new herbs and spices led to a surge in books on cooking, most of which still exist in academic collections. The introduction of the TV brings us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on this recipe site. |
