The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be observed way back into ancient history, in fact as far as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. However, mostly, these ancient records were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts is a series of clay tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel blissful. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we have a couple of books from the 1300s - a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, they have no connection with the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals served to the rich people of that time. Over the next few hundred years, the rich families of Europe strove to lay on the best banquets, and because of this chefs and their recipes became highly prized. Even so, it was during the 1800s that fine cookery and recipe collections became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, spent years to assembling, verifying, and recording recipes of the day. When we get to the 1900s, cooking publications are starting to become popular due to higher levels of literacy, increased leisure time and disposable income. |
