The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be traced way back into the far past, certainly as far back as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these early cook books were just primitive pictorial instructions for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe in existence, according to food historians are a few tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. Continuing our culinary historical journey, we have two interesting books dating from the 14th Century - a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these two books are nothing to do with the spicy food that is served today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals eaten by the nobility of those days. Over the succeeding few centuries, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to serve the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, cooks and their recipes were at a premium. Even so, it was during the 1800s that fine cooking and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to assembling, verifying, and recording the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. The TV revolution brings us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Chocolate Chip Brownies recipe.
