The History of Recipes
We can read the history of meal recipes far back into distant history, in fact as far back into history as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, these, old records were just very simple pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel exhilarated. Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a few documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, entrees and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius describes how the ancient Romans made use of a wide range of spices, including some familiar names such as bay, rue and dill. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods, spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices prompted a surge in publications on food, some of which still exist in academic collections. When we get to the 20th century, cookbooks were starting to become popular due to higher levels of literacy, people having more free time and being a little richer. The TV revolution gave us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
