The History of Recipes
Historians have tracked the existence of recipes way back into the far past, at least as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. In practice though, in the main part, these ancient cookbooks were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to historians is a collection of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we have some recipe books published in the 1300s : one book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these books are unconnected to the spicy food that appears on menues today, but rather recipes for the types of food on the menues of the upper classes of the period. Over the next few centuries, the upper-class families of Europe competed with each other to offer the most extravagent banquests, and because of this chefs and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cooking and recipe publications rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, testing, and recording recipes to help cooks of their time. The introduction of television brings us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this recipe site. |
