The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be traced far back into distant history, in fact as far into history as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, these, old records were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Later on, we find two interesting recipe books dating from the 1300s - a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these two books are unconnected to the indian curry that we all know today, but rather descriptions of the types of food prepared by the cooks of the upper classes of that period. By the time we get to the 20th century, cookbooks were starting to become popular due to higher levels of literacy, more spare time and being a little richer. |
