The History of Recipes

Food historians have proved the existance of recipes way back into ancient history, in fact as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, these, ancient cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.

Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts are some stone tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`.

During the time of the Roman Empire a man called Apicius compiled some scripts showing how to cook the recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his works, he describes how the roman meals were separated into appetizers, main course and afters, something we still use today. Aspicius describes how the ancient chefs made use of a good variety of aromatic flavours, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as basil, mint and parsley.

In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and spices from the holy lands, including spices such as parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas led to a torrent in cookery books, most of which are kept safe in private collections.

Over the following few hundred years, the rich families of Europe strove to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially chefs and their collection of recipes became highly prized. However, it was during the nineteenth century the formal cooking and recipe books became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and recording popular recipes of the day.

By the arrival of the 20th century, recipe books were starting to become popular as a result of better eduction, leisure time and disposable income.

Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on our site.
