The History of Recipes
We are able to read the history of written recipes back into the far past, in fact as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe even further. In practice though, in the main part, these early cook books were just simple pictorial recipes for preparing food.
As we move into The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts showing how to cook the recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into hors d`oeuvre, main course and dessert, something we still use today. Aspicius informs us how the Romans used many herbs, including some that we all recognise like bay, rue and asafoetida. In the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods and spices from the holy lands, such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new foods and spices prompted a torrent in recipe publications, most of which are kept safe in private collections. By the arrival of the twentieth century, cooking books were greatly in demand as a result of better eduction, people having more free time and having more money to spend. |
