The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be traced back into history, in truth as far back as pharonic Egypt, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, sadly, these old cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe found, according to historians is a series of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel wonderful. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there are two interesting recipe books published in the fourteenth century : one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, they are unconnected to the indian food that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals eaten by the rich and powerful of the period. Over the next few hundred years, the wealthy families of the West tried to offer the most extravagent banquests, and as a result the best chefs and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century that fine cookery and recipe collections became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collecting, testing, and recording popular recipes of the day. When we get to the 20th century, cooking books were starting to become popular as a result of increased literacy, people having increased spare time and having more money. The arrival of TV brought us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
