The History of Recipes
Experts have tracked the existance of recipes way back into antiquity, in truth as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, generally, these old cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Later on, in Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a number of documents which described recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his works, he recounts how the meals were split into appetizers, main meal and desserts, a very modern way of dining. He also informs us how the Roman chefs made use of many different aromatic flavours, including a few you will know for example basil, fennel and asafoetida. During the succeeding few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe tried to offer the most exotic banquets, and as a result chefs and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. However, it was during the 19th century that cookery and recipe books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, trying out, and writing down recipes of the day. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes like those on our site. |
