The History of Recipes

Food historians have proved the existence of recipes way back into the distant past, in fact as far back into history as the Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, these, old cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.

Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history are some stone tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`.

During Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few documents which described recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main course and afters, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also tells us how the ancient cooks used many different aromatic flavours, including some familiar names like basil, mint and asafoetida.

Closer to modern times, there were two interesting recipe books which appeared in the 1300s - a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these books are not about the curry that we all know today, but instead accounts of the types of meals cooked for the rich and powerful of that time.

Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and herbs from the holy land, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and basil. The introduction of these new foods and spices created a torrent in manuscripts on food, most of which are now in private cookery archives.

Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like those on our site.
