The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of written recipes far back into the far past, at least as far as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these ancient cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
As we move into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius created some documents describing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his works, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius also describes how the Romans used a wide range of aromatic flavours, including some that we all recognise such as bay, rue and dill. During the next few centuries, the powerful and rich competed with each other to serve the most exotic meals, and because of this cooks and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cookery and recipe publications really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to assembling, trying out, and writing down popular recipes of the day. The revolution that is television gave us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes just like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
We hope you enjoy this Chocolate Date Nut Bread (Day) recipe.
