The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to follow the history of written cooking instructions way back into ancient history, in truth as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. Having said that, these, early records were just simple pictorial instructions for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts is a series of clay tablets in Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel `wonderful`. As we move into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of documents describing recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his works, he tells us how the roman meals were separated into appetizers, main course and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius also tells us how the chefs of Roman times used a good variety of herbs, including some that we all recognise such as thyme, fennel and parsley. As we move on, there were two interesting books which date from the 1300s - a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these two books are not about the spicy food that is served today, but rather recipes for the types of food prepared by the cooks of the rich people of that period. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many spices and herbs from the holy land, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and basil. These new foods and spices created a torrent in books on cooking, the majority of which are now in private libraries. The revolution that is television gave us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
