The History of Recipes
We are able to read the history of meal recipes way back into the distant past, in fact as far back into history as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. Having said that, these, ancient recipes were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to food historians is a collection of ancient tablets in Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `blissful`. As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a few documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he tells us how the roman meals were divided into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and desserts, something we still use today. He also informs us how the Roman cooks used a good variety of aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example bay, mint and parsley. During the next few centuries, the powerful families of the West strove to serve the best banquets, and because of this the best cooks and their recipe collections could command a high salary. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cooking and recipe books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, trying out, and publishing the recipes of their peers. The revolution that is television brought us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as this. |
We hope you enjoy this Chocolate Drizzle recipe.
