The History of Recipes
Academics have proved the existance of recipes back into ancient history, in fact as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these early cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we have some books dating from the 1300s : a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these books are nothing to do with the curry that appears on menues today, but instead recipes for the types of food on the tables of the nobility of that time. By the arrival of the 1900s, cookbooks are in great demand, mostly as a result of more people being able to read, people having more spare time and having more disposable income. |
