The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of `recipes` far back into the far past, in fact as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. However, these, early records were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are a few tablets in Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel blissful and exhilarated. Closer to modern times, we have a couple of interesting cookery books published in the 14th Century ; a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these are nothing to do with the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but instead accounts of the types of meals cooked for the nobility of that time. During the succeeding few centuries, the rich families of Wesstern Europe tried to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and because of this the best cooks and their recipe collections increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that haute cuisine and recipe books became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, verifying, and recording recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the time we get to the twentieth century, cooking publications are increasing in popularity as a result of higher levels of literacy, more leisure time and a general increase in wealth. |
