Grandma Ruby's Famous Chocolate Birthday Frosting Beat when cool. I
suppose you melt all this in a double boiler... If any frosting

The History of Recipes

Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be tracked back into the distant past, at least as far as early Egypt, and maybe further still. In practice though, generally, these ancient cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.

In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered, according to academics is a series of clay tablets in Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel wonderful and blissful.

Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of documents describing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. He recounts how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. He also tells us how the Roman cooks made use of a wide range of spices and herbs, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example basil, rue and dill.

Over the succeeding few centuries, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to serve the most exotic meals, and consequentially the best cooks and their collection of recipes were at a premium. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cooking and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, testing, and recording recipes common in their social group.

When we get to the 20th century, recipe books are in high demand, mostly as a result of better eduction, people having more spare time and having more disposable income.

The TV revolution brought us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on this site.
