The History of Recipes
We are able to read the history of meal recipes back into the far past, in truth as far back into history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, generally, these ancient cookbooks were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to academics is a collection of stone tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. As we move on, there are a couple of interesting books which date from the 1300s ; a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these two books are unconnected to the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals eaten by the rich and powerful. Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many spices and herbs from Arab countries, including spices such as rosemary and coriander. These new herbs and spices led to an eruption in books on cookery, most of which are now in private collections. During the following few hundred years, the wealthy families of the West competed with each other to serve up the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, chefs and their recipe collections were at a premium. Even so, it was during the 19th century that fine cooking and recipe books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, trying out, and writing down recipes common in their social group. By the time we get to the 1900s, cooking books were in high demand, mostly due to more people being able to read, leisure time and having more disposable income. The arrival of television brought us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
