The History of Recipes
Historians have traced the existence of recipes back into distant history, in fact as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. However, in the main part, these old cookbooks were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to historians is a series of ancient tablets in Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we have a couple of books which date from the 1300s ; one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these two books are nothing to do with the indian curry that we all know today, but rather accounts of the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the nobility of the period. Over the next few centuries, the wealthy families of Europe strove to lay on the most exotic meals, and as a result chefs and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that fine cooking and cookery books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. By the arrival of the twentieth century, recipe books were starting to become popular mostly due to increased literacy, more spare time and having more money. |
