The History of Recipes

Academics have found proof that recipes existed way back into distant history, in fact as far back as pharonic Egypt, and maybe even further. However, in the main part, these early recipes were just simple hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.

The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to food historians is a series of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel exhilarated.

As we move on, there were some interesting books published in the fourteenth century ; a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these books are nothing to do with the indian curry that we all know today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals enjoyed by the upper classes.

During the following few hundred years, the upper-class families of the West strove to offer the most extravagent banquests, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipe collections could command a high salary. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cooking and recipe books really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, spent years to collating, trying out, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them.

The revolution that is television brings us TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes like those on sites such as this.
