The History of Recipes

We can track the history of written recipes back into the distant past, in fact as far as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these early cookbooks were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.

In fact, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to historians are a few ancient tablets in Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel wonderful and blissful.

Progressing into Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of scripts describing recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvre, main course and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also describes how the ancient cooks used a wide range of herbs, including some that we all recognise such as basil, rue and parsley.

Later on, there were a couple of interesting recipe books which were published in the fourteenth century ; one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these are unconnected to the indian curry that is popular today, but instead recipes for the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the upper classes.

Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices like parsley and basil. These new foods and spices prompted a torrent in recipe books, many of which are kept safe in private libraries.

The introduction of the TV gave us cooking programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading.
