The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to follow the history of recipes way back into history, in truth as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. However, generally, these early cook books were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to academics is a collection of clay tablets in Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel blissful and exhilarated. Later on, there were two books which date from the fourteenth century : a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, they have no connection with the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the wealthy. For the centuries that followed, the rich and powerful families of Europe tried to offer the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s the formal cooking and recipe collections became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. By the time we get to the 20th century, cookery publications are starting to become popular mostly due to more people being able to read, people having increased spare time and having more disposable income. |
