The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of `recipes` back into the far past, at least as far back into history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these old cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history are a few tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of documents describing recipes prepared by the Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius describes how the roman meals were separated into starters, main course and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. This early Roman chef recounts how the ancient cooks used many different herbs and spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example bay, rue and dill. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods, spices and herbs from Arab countries, including spices such as parsley and basil. These new spices and herbs led to an increase in books on cookery, some of which are now in private libraries. By the advent of the 20th century, cooking publications are in great demand, due to more people being able to read, more spare time and a general increase in wealth. The revolution that is television brings us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like those on our site. |
