Ingredients
2 oz unsweetened chocolate
1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
2 each eggs
1/2 cup flour
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup chopped pecans
16 each large marshmallows
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350. Grease an 11 1/2 x 7 baking pan. Melt
chocolate and butter in top of double boiler over hot water. Set
aside. 2. Cream sugar and eggs until light and fluffy. Add flour.
Beat. Add melted chocolate and butter. Beat well. Mix in vanilla
and pecans. 3. Pour into prepared pan. Bake 18 minutes. Remove from
oven and cover with marshmallows. Return to oven and bake until
marshmallows are lightly browned. 4. Cool slightly and cut into bars.

The History of Recipes
Historians have proved the existance of recipes far back into ancient history, certainly as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, sadly, these early records were just simple pictorial recipes for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history is a series of tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel wonderful. During Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled some scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and desserts, something we still use today. Aspicius also tells us how the Romans were skilled in the use of a wide range of herbs and spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as bay, fennel and parsley. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices like parsley and basil. These new foods and spices caused a surge in books on cooking, most of which still exist in academic collections. During the succeeding few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of the West competed to serve up the most exotic meals, and because of this the best chefs and their recipe collections could command a high salary. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cooking and recipe books really came of age. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to assembling, verifying, and publishing the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on our web site. |
