The History of Recipes

It is quite feasible to prove the history of written cooking instructions way back into distant history, at least as far into history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. Having said that, these, early cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.

Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history are some tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `wonderful`.

As we move into The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a number of documents detailing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the roman meals were divided into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and afters, something we still use today. Aspicius recounts how the Romans were skilled in the use of many aromatic flavours, including some that we all recognise such as bay, mint and dill.

During the next few hundred years, the upper-class families of the West competed to offer the most exotic meals, and consequentially chefs and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cooking and recipe books became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, spent years to collating, trying out, and recording popular recipes of the day.

By the time we get to the twentieth century, cookery publications were in great demand, mostly as a result of better eduction, increased leisure time and a general increase in wealth.

Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site.
