The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of `recipes` back into ancient history, in truth as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, these, early cookbooks were just primitive pictorial recipes for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to academics are some clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel exhilarated and blissful. Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a Roman scholar, called Apicius, assembled some scrolls detailing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius recounts how the cooks of Roman times were skilled in the use of a good variety of aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks such as basil, fennel and dill. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods and spices from Arab cuisine, including coriander, parsley, and basil. These new spices and herbs created an eruption in manuscripts on cookery, some of which still exist in private collections. By the arrival of the twentieth century, recipe books were in great demand, as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having increased free time and having more disposable income. The introduction of television brought us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on sites such as this. |
