The History of Recipes
Food historians have proved the existance of recipes far back into antiquity, certainly as far back into recorded history as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these early records were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered, according to food historians are a few clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel blissful and exhilarated. Later on, there were some recipe books which appeared in the 14th Century ; a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, they are not about the curry that appears on menues today, but instead accounts of the types of meals on the menus of the rich people of that period. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods and herbs from the holy land, including parsley and basil. These new herbs and spices was responsible for a torrent in manuscripts on cooking, some of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. For the next few years, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to offer the most exotic meals, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipe collections could command a high salary. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that cooking and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The introduction of the TV brings us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on our web site. |
