The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of `recipes` far back into the distant past, at least as far as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. However, sadly, these early cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts is a collection of tablets in the Sumerian language which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel exhilarated. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we have some interesting books published in the 14th Century : a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these two books have no connection with the curry that is served today, but instead accounts of the types of food served to the rich. Over the following few centuries, the rich families of the West strove to offer the most extravagent banquests, and as a result cooks and their collection of recipes became highly prized. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century that formal cookery and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. By the arrival of the twentieth century, cooking publications were greatly in demand as a result of increased literacy, people having more spare time and disposable income. |
