The History of Recipes
Experts have tracked the existence of recipes far back into ancient history, certainly as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, generally, these old cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a collection of documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, main course and desserts, a very modern way of dining. He also tells us how the ancient cooks used a wide range of spices, including many that are still in use today such as basil, fennel and asafoetida. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and spices from the East, including coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices was responsible for a torrent in books on cooking, the majority of which are now in private cookery archives. The introduction of the TV brings us TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this web site. |
