The History of Recipes

Written recipes as an idea can be tracked way back into the far past, certainly as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.

In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts is a series of stone tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel wonderful.

Continuing our culinary historical journey, we have a couple of recipe books dating from the 14th Century : a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these are nothing to do with the curry that is popular today, but rather descriptions of the types of food prepared by the chefs of the nobility of the period.

Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs prompted a surge in manuscripts on cooking, many of which are now in academic collections.

Over the succeeding few centuries, the upper-class families of Europe competed to serve up the most exotic banquets, and because of this the best cooks and their collection of recipes became highly prized. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cooking and recipe collections became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them.

When we get to the twentieth century, cooking books are highly popular mostly due to higher levels of literacy, more leisure time and disposable income.

The TV revolution brings us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes such as those found on our site.
