The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be observed way back into the distant past, certainly as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe even further. Having said that, in the main part, these ancient cookbooks were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
Much later, in Roman times a man called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the roman meals were separated into appetizers, main meal and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also informs us how the cooks of his times were skilled in the use of many different spices, including some that we all recognise such as thyme, fennel and parsley. Later on, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new foods and spices created an eruption in publications on food, many of which still exist in private libraries. The TV revolution brought us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like those on this recipe site. |
