The History of Recipes
Academics have proved the existance of recipes back into ancient history, certainly as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these old cookbooks were just very basic pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history is a series of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel `wonderful`. During the time of the Roman Empire a man called Apicius created some documents detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his works, he describes how the meals were separated into appetizers, main meal and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius informs us how the Roman cooks were skilled in the use of many aromatic flavours, including some familiar names like bay, rue and asafoetida. Over the following few hundred years, the rich families of the West competed to serve the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipe collections increased in prestige. However, it was during the 19th century that cooking and recipe publications became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to collating, trying out, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. The introduction of television brings us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
