The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of written recipes back into history, in fact as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, in the main part, these old recipes were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history is a series of stone tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel wonderful and blissful. As we move on, there are a couple of books from the 14th Century - a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these books are unconnected to the indian curry that appears on menues today, but rather descriptions of the types of food prepared by the cooks of the rich and powerful of the period. During the following few hundred years, the wealthy families of the West strove to serve the best banquets, and as a consequence, cooks and their recipes increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cooking and recipe publications became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collating, verifying, and publishing recipes of the day. By the advent of the 20th century, cooking books were starting to become popular due to more people being able to read, people having more free time and a general increase in wealth. The revolution that is television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like those on our web site. |
